At age 8, my knowledgeable neighbor girl told it was a pee-knuckle. “Boys have a pee-nis, and we have a pee-knuckle,” she declared. “Cuz it looks like a knuckle,’ she explained, making a fist and then pointing to the vulva outline formed by adjacent fingers. I was a bit skeptical, but it made sense, and it did look like what I saw when I looked down at my own my 8 year old kid body. It remained the anatomical truth for me, for close to a decade, held privately, because back then, why would you ever speak of such things? Finally, I had a reason to use the term with someone else; it was my boyfriend’s puzzled expression that clued me in. Then it dawned on me that the word was Mary’s own invention. p.s. she went on to specialize in social work, focusing on sex therapy.
