  1. Hi there,

I love your blog, you’re an inspiration.
I am a 23 year old who has a bit of a wild sexual history at university. I didn’t get the Hpv vaccination and now I have sleepless nights that my stupid mistakes are going to give me cervical cancer. I don’t get a smear till I’m 25 but is there anything I can do to stop this anxiety before my smear? I’m really worried I’ve hurt myself as this is the leading cause of cervical cancer.
    Thanks,
    J

    • I’ve had a wild past too. But don’t beat yourself up over it. It only takes one sexual encounter to get HPV. 70 -80% will get it at one point or another. It really is that common. So, yes promiscuity increases your chances, but I know plenty of women who have had one sexual partner and gone on to get CC. It’s not a given that you will have HPV. Most people who get HPV clear it from their bodies anyway. Like a common cold. Some for whatever reason can’t/don’t and this can lead to cervical abnormalities. Jo’s trust website has loads of info and a forum about smear anxiety. My tip for what it’s worth is have a couple of paracetamol before you go. If you are really nervous get a friend to come along with you. They can wait in the waiting room. Tell the nurse you are nervous, babble nervously about the weather, Eastenders, whatever takes your fancy and it will be over before you know it. Good luck.
